Just Above My Head
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (February, 1990)
Author: James A. Baldwin
Average review score:

A stirring work...
Highly recommended...This is an "intense" read...and you will find yourself going back and re-reading certain pages to make sure that you absorbed everything from the page. A stirring story of two brothers desperately seeking to find themselves and a true identity outside of the religious world they had been so immersed in...

A Literary Wonder
I first came across the book as a teenager, rooting around amidst the books my brother left behind. I was just coming out then, and decided to try and read it. Much of it flew over my head then, but upon returning to it as an adult, I found much here to treasure. The characters not only inhabit the pages, but leap right off them at times, and the reader feels like he would want to sit in a room with them, talk with them, laugh with them and grieve with them. As a black gay man, it's nearly an autobiographical read, showing how far ahead of his time Baldwin was. It definitely comes highly recommended from this reader.

It's About Time for Just Above My Head
James Baldwin's voice creates a rich portrait to accompany the tale of a family atmosphere and all the forces that converge on them as friends, lovers, and kin. The cast of characters speak through their actions, allowing you to feel the "holy ghost" that the child-turned-preacher Julia could send through a church as well as the vocal harmony of a group of young black men who go on a singing tour of the south in a time where lynching was a pasttime of small town racists. I read this for the first time a mere seven years ago, and since then have read it again and again for the simple fact that you can pick up so much direct and indirect emotions, actions, and premises by hearing the main cast--Arthur, Julia, and Hall, as well as those they come into contact with as they all make their way towards finding a balance between the small line between existence and nonexistence historically for Afro-Americans. "Just Above My Head" reads like an almanac of people, places, and things that get lost in the romantic "good old days" that too many of our literary genius are guilty of promoting while ignoring the "have nots" of society. This book is a staple for me, and I know I'm not the only one, so if you haven't read it, then do so.

The Keys to Enlightened Living: Channeled Messages from the Masters
Published in Paperback by Prism Publishing (April, 2001)
Author: James Webb
Average review score:

A Paradigm-Changing Breakthrough for the New Millennium
This book represents a quantum leap forward in the consciousness of mankind as we enter the "Age of Aquarius." Old paradigms of lack, punishment and dogma are set aside. In their place are non-judgemental, unconditional, infinite love and abundance. This ground-breaking book appeals to the intellect, explaining the whys and wherefores of the new understandings of light consciousness. It touches the heart, allowing an opening to more love...not only romantic love, but the unfathomable love of our Creator. Physical concerns are addressed, including the perennial favorites, diet and exercise. Readers are shown how to non-judgementally love themselves, filling themselves with the true light and love. In addition to enlightening on mental, emotional and physical levels, this book takes a quantum leap forward in the spiritual realm. Rather than the traditional view of a separate, distant God, this book introduces a more accessible, "user-friendly" God. Prayers and affirmations appear in bold-face print to allow the reader to make a permanent shift in consciousness through regular repetitions. Be sure to also check out the "prequel" book, Pathways to Inner Peace.

A Primer for Life
This book is an excellent "primer for life "for those seekers of truth at any juncture upon the path.Cogent examples of prayers and meditations are provided to align one with helpful beings of light.Additionally, numerous self-help tactics and strategies are proposed for novice and evolved metaphysicians to clear and purify their innate spriritual space and to access heightened levels of spiritual development. This book is a must read for lightbearers.

The Keys to Enlightened Living
The messages Rev. Webb channels and records in this book are powerful and riveting. And they come through in a compassionate, gentle, non-judgmental way. Yet, they always make perfect sense. In my previous spiritual endeavors I have never found any guidance that ever rang so profoundly true. As I take in the teachings the Masters give, I hear myself saying "of course! of course! It's the perfect explanation!" Without exception, every area touched on becomes enlightened to me: why we are here, what daily life is all about, what relationships are for, the true purpose and reality of sexuality, the understanding about how we have developed blockages and how we have created pain and suffering based on guilt, and the gift we have in using emotional release to heal and transform all these areas. This news is exhilarating. I am set free; I soar with hope, understanding. I am lifted up to new horizons. All my relationships and so-called "problems" now take on new meaning-- they are my own manifestations to bring me to new levels of understanding, healing and love; to bring transformations into my life and help me know a stronger connection to God. As I have allowed this transforming Light, this grace of God, to touch my life, my health, affairs, relationships and thoughts have shifted and healed. I have witnessed instantaneous healing of an injury, dramatic transformation of destructive personal patterns, and the lifting of family problems . All my life issues are healing and I can now assert my boundaries and speak my truth with confidence, yet compassion for others. I have been able to turn around what I had deemed to be unhappy situations and relationships through release, prayer, meditation and affirmation work. My "psychic" experiences have intensified and increased. Most importantly, I have a new sense of my own power and my own right to joy, good health and peace. I have come to know that God's will is that we have all our hearts' desires, that the universe supports us, that we always have help and protection. Rev. Webb shows great courage and grace in disclosing personal details of his life so that others may relate and know that they too can transform their lives. I have seen him at his work and it is obvious he takes seriously his own thorough and continual spiritual progression. He models the wisdom he channels. Notwithstanding his great achievements - academically, professionally, personally, and otherwise -- he has struck a stunning balance between humility and self-love. Rather than work from his ego, he empowers others and respects their right of self-responsibility. He serves with sincerity, compassion, humor. I honor him for all the gifts he has given me through this book, the chanelling sessions, and his example, and I honor him for stepping out as pure, powerful channel of these liberating messages. For all of us can now be blessed with these tools to heal and transform our lives and the world.

The Kitty Treats Cookbook

Average review score:

Nice Book
This book contains very basic recipes with ingredients that can be found in any food store around the country. Directions were very clear and since the book is coated, it's very easy to clean. I would recommend this book.

very fun!!
This is a great treat book! All of the recipes are very easy to make and my cat loves them. I have 3 cats but two of them are very picky. I hav'nt tried all of them yet, but I'm sure there are a few they will like. A must for any cat lover who likes cooking!!

these recipes helped my cat and i love each other even more!
my kitty 'PUFF' and i, probably like most other pet owners, have a special loving relationship. When i first made some of these treats from the books recipes, 'PUFF' couldn't seem to get enough of them!!! She loved 'em!! but even more important to me was that i was putting some of myself into each and every treat she ate and enjoyed. somehow i feel she knows there's some of me in every one. maybe that's why she loves them more than any i ever bought for her. i know any pet owner will get so much more satisfaction from making and feeding these home made treats to their cats than simply going out and buying the commercial kind.

Kwikscan Holy Bible: Complete Authorized King James Version
Published in Paperback by Micro-Books (January, 1988)
Author: M. F. Morris
Average review score:

Brilliant Idea, M.F. Morris, Where are You?
I purchased my KJV Kwikscan several years ago when it was first made available. As a Pastor it is easy for me to review books of the Bible before I preach a prepared sermon. I have suggested it to others and now I find out that Kwikscan is out of print. What a shame, I am buying every copy that I find, which is not many!

kwikscan bible-great learning tool
The kwikscan bible is a great tool in learning God's word. It has helped me and my grown children be able to read the bible and really enjoy it. I am so sorry it is not being printed any longer.

The KWIKSAN - A "Kwality" edition of the KJV Bible
It is unfortunate that the KWIKSCAN Bible is out of print. It has been, I believe, unjustifiably maligned by many of those who would consider themselves purists of verbal plenary inspiration. Since I consider myself among the "purists", I can only say that I believe most objectors have misunderstood the purpose of KWIKSCAN. Every word of the KJV text is printed with certain words place in bold faced type which form their own thoughts and sentences. These words summarize passages in an understandable and concise manner. Reading just the bold faced words allows you to quickly review the text with much greater comprehension. Indeed, a major university research study revealed that on the average KWIKSCAN reduced reading time 65% while increasing understanding 35%. KWIKSCAN is an ideal tool to use when the purpose is to review the text for overall content and meaning when you do not have time to get bogged down in the specific genealogies or numbering of the tribes of Israel. The editors have been careful and faithful to preserve the essential meaning of each passage while not eliminating or altering a single word. I would highly recommend QUIKSCAN to any student of the Bible who at times has a need to review the richness of God's word but has limited time to do so. Find a copy if you can.

The Leadership Solution
Published in Digital by McGraw-Hill ()
Authors: Jim Shaffer and James C. Shaffer
Average review score:

The Leadership Solution
Jim Shaffer's book, The Leadership Solution, is a MUST READING both for all corporate communications executives and staff and CEOs. Nobody does a better job in the age of "High Tech" to remind us to use the "High Touch." If we take the points that Jim cites, then we will find that attrition will be decreased.

Jim reminds us throughout that employee communications and touch will make the difference in performance and thus, stock price and a competitive and "best in class" company.

Shaffer lays out clearly the VISION aand STRATEGY. We all need to follow his course of what he states. "A vision is a target, a picture of the future. A strategy is a roadmap, how you're going to achieve the vision."

Tools are excellent. Follow the Readiness questionnaire to improving performance. See if we can all master the 6 course process to connect people or employees or associates to the business strategy. Shaffer identifies the 20 things to generate commitment. He cites the "3 people principles" that guide Best Practices and the Best Performance.

With all the focus on Mergers and Acquisitions, we find that Shaffer's 9 Guildelines for negotiating through the M&A are excellent.

Shaffer's examples of CEOs help build the case. His messages will help any communications chief help your CEO.

Shaffer demonstrates vividly how and why the communication function is being reinvented. The last chapter embodies the message strongly. It means what we all learn that communications much be align to assist the company's strategic goals. Shaffer does it.

Read and underline; share with your colleagues.

The Leadership Solution
For over twenty years, I have been an advisor to management in the field of rewards and compensation. Traditionally, discussions of rewards at work focus on cash compensation, benefits, and, more recently, stock deals. These monetary and wealth-building vehicles help one have great experiences in life outside of work. But what about the experiences at work, where a dedicated employee might spend more than half of waking time? What makes the day-to-day work experience itself rewarding? In an age where the war for talent demands that every organization address this question successfully, Jim Shaffer provides powerful, practical answers for CEO's, executive teams, general managers, and heads of human resources.

At the heart of the day-to-day work experience is the process of communication. As Mr. Shaffer writes, "You can't not communicate. Everything you say and do communicates." Forget about bringing dogs to work and on-site concierge services. These are fluff, not substance. Mr. Shaffer gets to the substance. He demonstrates that the quality of organization communication is, by far, the greatest governor of the quality of the work experience for all employees.

Mr. Shaffer shows leaders how to develop a communication environment that shapes a highly rewarding day-to-day work experience for everyone in the organization. He shows how to build and lead ongoing organization communication processes and disciplines that align people to a common purpose and motivate them to pursue it with vigor. In the war for talent, he shows how to span the generations and ensure that one and all agree: "Our company is a great place to work! "

Do you face unprecedented challenges in attracting, retaining, aligning, motivating and rewarding top-notch staff at all levels? "The Leadership Solution" delivers distinctive know-how for building a huge advantage in getting, keeping and deploying the people you need. And, it's an enjoyable read, sprinkled with metaphors, quotes and anecdotes that produce many rewarding "Aha!" experiences.

Shaffer delivers primer for leaders
Just when you thought you couldn't handle one more piece of Information Age data, Jim Shaffer mercifully reveals the secrets to managing message bombardment, recognizing and maximizing all forms of communication, and connecting people with purpose to run any business better. With insights from many of the world's top CEOs, two "case studies," plain old good writing and a spot-on sailing metaphor to top it off, Shaffer proves what the best leaders have known (or at least have sensed) for some time: "informed people outperform uninformed people..." Better still, Shaffer steers a clear course -- with plenty of helpful examples -- through the sea of ambiguity that is business today, mapping the route for leaders who need to connect their employees to their business strategies. He calls it "connecting the dots." Business schools everywhere should use it and call it "Leadership 101." This is a terrific book for great leaders seeking to gain further marketplace advantage, leaders in training seeking instruction for "putting it all together" and the managers who serve them. The chapter on "earthshaking" events would be especially helpful for any one managing through a merger, acquisition, turnaround and the like.

KJV Holy Bible Compact Reference, Gold Edition Button Flap
Published in Leather Bound by Zondervan (March, 2000)
Author: Zondervan Bible Publishers
Average review score:

Practically perfect in every way
I previously owned Zondervan's Student Bible which is an excellent version for people who don't know things like "Why did the Apostles wash Jesus' feet?" and so on. Hence, I sort of outgrew this Bible.

But this version, after much research, was exactly what I needed. About 5" x 8", it is light enough for me to shove into my bag, as I do a lot of travelling. The cross references in the middle column are extremely useful and thorough. Plus it has a flap to close over the book so the pages don't get torn. The perfect match for me.

So covenient
What I really like about this Bible is the feel of it in my hand. You feel like you can have the Bible with you at all times. It's so light and convenient. It makes reading the Bible easy and you can carry it anywhere. You don't feel like you're lugging something around. I just stick it in my jacket pocket and it's not a burden to carry in your hand. I've had other larger Bibles, but I never read them. I always go for this compact reference Bible even at home. The small print is still easy to read and my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be.

Great pocket Bible!
This Bible is probably the most thorough compact Bible you're going to find. I found that the maps, concordance, and the historical/literary introduction with a summary at the beginning of each book to be the most helpful. (I don't know why they don't stress the latter on the front of the cover box.) It's also the smallest (width- and lengthwise) I encountered with both the NT and OT (I went to several bookstores). Yes, the print is small, but it's the biggest print you'll find among compact Bibles-- I haven't had trouble reading it, and I think it manages to keep a reasonably-sized print by having more pages (it's a little thicker than most-- about an inch thick.) It's also durable. One word of advice: more than likely you're getting a compact Bible because you want to cram it (for lack of a better term) in your purse, backpack, pocket, or whatever and carry it around. I have the leatherbound kind with no flap, and although it's still in one piece after 2 years, all the pages keep getting crinkled and squashed. I love this little thing, but if I were to buy another, I'd get the one with the flap. (IBN 0-310-90810-8.) As for the edition itself, it's great!

Leading Change : Overcoming the Ideology of Comfort and the Tyranny of Custom
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (May, 1995)
Author: James O'Toole
Average review score:

interesting approach - but look for an update
By all means, I recommend you to read this book. However, since this book came out in 1995, a NEW VERSION is available in paperback. The new version includes an extra preface and some revisions to chapter 2 and chapter 8.

Challenges Us to Think!
This is one of those rare books that truly challenges us to think about our approach to leadership and its consequences. With numerous historical and contemporary examples, O'Toole contrasts tough, situational leadership with democratic, values-based leadership.

By using tough leadership examples like Lee Kuan Yew who led Singapore from a Third World country to the First World and Jack Welch who probably has the best performance record of any modern CEO, he makes his task of showing the superiority of values-based leadership all the more difficult. In addition to the Rushmoreans - Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and T. Roosevelt - he uses contemporary examples like Nelson Mandela and Max De Pree to illustrate the lasting impact of values-based leaders.

He makes us question whether the short-term gains of tough leadership are worth the long-term consequences, even for Singapore and General Electric. His message is all the more relevant now that we have seen the damage caused by the Enrons of this world. His is a critical message and, if heeded, could make this a better world.

Breath of Fresh Air
If you are a liberal arts major who found yourself ending up in the business world, you will eat up this book. Starting with an analysis of leadership thru the meaning of Christ Comes to Brussells, an 19th century early expressionist work, the author leads you thru Plato to Evans-Pitchard in an analysis on leadership. It also provides a great rebuttal for moral relativism

Leningrad Codex: A Facsimile Edition

Authors: David Noel Freedman, Astrid B. Beck, and James A. Sanders
Average review score:

A Stunning Book for anyone in Theological Studies should own
This book is truly Cherished. When I was doing my undergrad studies alol my professors got jealous of my owning this book. This is the Oldest Full connon of the Tenach, The Hebrew Bible. There are fantastic folio pages of rich colour. Whether you are a Jew, Muslim, or Christian this is an important text in terms of Biblical Scholarship. The only warning that I would give is learn Hebrew before obtaining or else you will be frustrated as 99 44/100% of the book is written in Hebrew. Every Synagogue and Church Library would be greatly enhanced in adding this very important text. Even Sunday School teachers would be blessed owning this book. I am in Seminary now and find that I use this book on a regular basis. I know that this book is rather on the pricey side, but it is a truly once in a lifetime purchase. This is a book to be used, loved, and adored. I hope that this review has been Helpful. Baruch HaShem Yeshua HaMashiach

The most important text in hundreds of years
As a theological student I was overwhelmed the first time I saw this book. Now that I own my own copy, I have come to appreciate it even more -- especially since I can actually READ it now rather than simply look at it.

Access is a must for serious biblical scholars. After all, why do we learn biblical Hebrew -- in order to read the Bible in its original language. Though the Biblia Herbrica is a faithful text, why should we rely on anything but the oldest available complete text?

The introductory historical notes and additional notations are invaluable as well. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK IN MY LIBRARY and probably will continue to be for many years.

Not as overwhelmed by margins as I said :))
I wish to apologize about my bluffingly account about the margins of this book.
In the previous review I wished to rate this book 4.5 stars, which i couldn't, and now I rate it 5 stars so that it averages to 4.5 stars.
You'll find the margins are not as wide as I said in the criticism below. Actually the whole margin area is barely the same as the text area. Margin of the original codex + a little margin of the photography + margin around the photo adds up to as wide as the area occupied by the text.
The reason that the black-and-white photo gets darker than the color plates might be that the photo films are less sensitive to yellow than to blue. Since the parchment leaves are somewhat tinted in light yellow, the photocopy couldn't help appearing darker than it actually is.
If I could make touch with the publishers, I would like to advise them to use special film more sensitive to yellow light when they make the revision.

The Letter of James
Published in Hardcover by Apollos (Enk) (January, 2000)
Authors: Douglas J. Moo and D. A. Carson
Average review score:

Solid and informative
A good commentary that will get you familiar with the many different interpretations of James, but will ultimately supply you with a rock solid study. Especially good is his treatment of the "problems" people often encounter with James 2.

There are plenty of footnotes that refer you to other works for further study concerning some opposing views, though not by any means an overkill on footnotes.

I am using this text in my "General Epistles" class at Lee University (Pentecostal - Church of God - Clevland, TN.) It should be noted though that this is not an academic level commentary, but is designed for lay and clergy alike. Hard as it may seem, Moo was able to squeeze out 191 pages of commentary.

Excellect commentary
Basically I use this book as my resource of the Sunday school
class. The more I read it, the more I like it. Moo is very careful in tracing the meaning of the texts by examining the
Old Testament, extra-biblical literatures and the context. If some texts are controversial, he is very even-handed in handling different solutions and comes up with a reasonable conclusion.

The even more important thing is he does not only render good
exegesis but also provide some good applications in christian life. I feel very impressed by his insightful prospectives.

Great book!!

Great commentary
This is the only commentary I have read on James, so I can't fairly compare it to others. But I can't imagine reading a more lucid, informed, intriguing, and just all around Godly understanding of what can be one of the most difficult books of the NT to understand. Moo handles each passage with clarity, being fair to different views and presenting his own conclusions. The book also has a well articulated introduction and discussion of time, place, and authorship.

I would have wished Moo had included Greek words in their original letters as well as their transliteration. I also wish he had interacted a bit more with the Greek text. Moo, however, was only staying true to the general format of the Pillar series, which assumes no previous Greek study on the part of the reader.

Both the hard cover as well as its dusk jacket are well manufactured and good looking. The pages are nice and the small size of the book makes it fairly easy to handle.

Overall, one of the best commentaries on any book that I have read.
